There are a lot of apps that are very effective for helping primary students to share their learning in a digital portfolio. A few of my favorites are listed below.

Blogging Apps

Most blogging tools have their own app, including Edublogs and Kidblog.


Students can take pictures with an iPad of any artifact they have created which can be posted on their portfolio. For example a letter to Santaor a Lego creation & Video Example

A screenshot of anything created on an iPad can be posted as an image in a digital portfolio. (Make a screenshot by pressing the home button and the hold button at the same time.) Example

Apps That Demonstrate Learning

Screen Shot 2012-10-08 at 3.21.11 PM.pngDraw Free - (free) Students who cannot yet write about what they know can draw what they know. This app also allows you to annotate photos with labels etc. to show learning. Drawings can be sent right to your photos app. Example

Doodle Buddy (free) is another good choice for a drawing tool. The app also has stamps. It does not allow direct export to the photos app.

The ShowMe app (free) records the studetn talking as he draws or writes words. Students can also import an image and explain that image. The site provides an embed code for the screencast. Example

Educreations (free) allows students to insert images, add text and record their voice to make a screencast. The app provides a link or embed code. Example

Using Sock Puppets, (free students can explain their learning through the voice of the puppets. Saved videos can be uploaded to Youtube.

Students can also use the puppets in Puppet Pals HD (free) to show their learning through the voices of the puppets. As with Sock Puppets, videos can be uploaded directly to Youtube. Example

Skitch can be used to annotate photos and drawings. Example
